The theory test cost is £23
At the booking stage click that you require a theory test and the Pass Now team will book the test and when you have been recommended a driving instructor the theory test confirmation will be emailed and you can use the links to check, change the date, time and centre location.
How does the theory test work?
Prior to the start of the test, you will be given instructions on how it works.
You will be given the option to do a practice session of multiple-choice questions to help you get used to the layout of the test. At the end of the practice session the real test will begin.
A question and several possible answers will appear on a computer screen – you have to select the correct answer/s. There is sometimes more than one answer per question.
You can flag a question if you are unsure of the answer and return to it later in the test.
Some car questions will be given as a case study. The case study will: show a short story that 5 questions will be based on real life examples and experiences you could come across when you’re driving
The car multiple-choice part lasts for 57 minutes, and the pass mark is 43 out of 50.
When you completed the multiple-choice part, you can choose to have a break of up
to 3 minutes before starting the hazard perception part.
When am I told the result of my theory test?
You will be given the results at the end of your theory tests in the test centre.
When you pass your theory test, you will be given a pass certificate. You will need this when you book and take your practical test.
Your theory test pass certificate lasts for 2 years from the date you pass your test. If you have not passed the practical test within the 2 year period, you will need to retake your theory test.

What do I need to study to help me pass my hazard perception test?

At what stage do I start the hazard perception part?
The hazard perception part starts shortly after completing the theory part.
You will be shown a short video clip about how it works before you start the hazard perception part.
You will be shown a series of 14 video clips on a computer screen.
The clips:
Feature everyday road scenes contains one ‘developing hazard’ – but one of the clips will feature 2 ‘developing hazards’
A developing hazard is something that may result in you having to take some action, such as changing speed or direction.
Hazard perception test scoring
The quicker that you respond to a developing hazard, the higher you will score.
The most you can score for each developing hazard is 5 points.
To get a high score you need to respond to the developing hazard as soon as you see it starting.
Any attempt to continuously click or in a pattern during a clip a message will appear at the end. It will tell you that you have scored zero for that particular clip.
You will not be able to review your answers.
The pass mark for a car is 44 out of 75.
Do I need to pass both parts on the same test?
The theory test is made up of a multiple-choice part and a hazard perception part. You need to pass both parts to pass the theory test.
If you pass one part and fail the other, you’ll fail the whole test, and you’ll need to take both parts again.
Are there any special requirements at the theory test centre?
You are not allowed to take any personal items into the test room with you. All your personal items must be stored in the lockers provided.
If you’re found with any prohibited items in the testing room your test will be stopped, you will be asked to leave and lose your test fee.
Once you are in the test room you are not allowed to talk to or distract other candidates.
Driving Licence:
Apply for your provisional driving licence in goodtime to be ready for your 17th birthday.
When you are in receipt of your driving licence you can apply for your theory test.
You will need to pass a two part test; the first part is a multiple choice test and the second is a Hazard Perception test. Both parts are done on a computer by using a touch screen for the questions and a mouse for the hazard perception to test your response on the 14 video clips. Providing you have studied the theory and practiced the hazard perception online you will find the tests are reachable goals…
Your theory knowledge will help towards your new driving skills that you will learn on the intensive driving course.
Even though you are in a room with several other candidates you are screened from one another, and you have the option to wear headphones to drown out any distractions. You must pass both parts to be successful.
What age can I start my driving lessons?
You can begin your driving lessons on your 17th birthday.
Do I choose manual or automatic transmission?
You can choose either manual or an automatic car to learn to drive in. If you pass in an manual car you can drive either. If you pass your test in an automatic car, you will only be able to drive that type of car.
When you can drive in a safe and competent manner without guidance from your driving instructor and have successfully completed several mock tests you should be ready to take your practical driving test.
At the start of your driving test, you will be asked to read a number plate.
The examiner will ask you one ‘show me’ question, where you will have to show how you would carry out a vehicle safety check. You will also be asked one ‘tell me’ question, where you have to explain to the examiner how you would carry out the check.
On your practical test you are expected to drive safely in different types of road and traffic conditions, have a good understanding of the Highway Code and prove this through your driving ability. If you show the standard required, you will pass the driving test.
