What age can I start my driving lessons?

You can begin your driving lessons on your 17th birthday.

If you’re getting the higher rate of the mobility component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) you can begin your driving lessons on your 16th birthday.

Do I choose manual or automatic transmission?

This depends on your driving licence entitlement and personal preference.

Please remember if you pass your test in a car with automatic transmission you will only be able to drive this type of car.

If you pass in a car with manual transmission you are entitled to drive both types of transmission.

What is the cost of the practical driving test?

Practical test fees – Weekday £62 / Evening, weekend and bank holiday £75

When should I apply for my driving test?

When you are able to drive in a safe and competent manner without guidance from your driving instructor.

Also when you have successfully completed a number of mock test with your driving instructor.

What Eyesight test do I do?

You will have to read a number plate from a distance of:

20 metres for vehicles with a new-style number plate

20.5 metres for vehicles with an old-style number plate

You are allowed to write down what you see if you can’t speak English or have difficulty reading.

What Vehicle safety questions do I get asked?

Show me / tell me questions.

You will be asked 2 vehicle safety questions.

The examiner will ask you one ‘show me’ question, where you will have to show how you would carry out a vehicle safety check.

You will also be asked one ‘tell me’ question, where you have to explain to the examiner how you would carry out the check.

What is expected of me on the driving test?

The practical driving test is designed to see if you:

can drive safely in different types of road and traffic conditions

have a good understanding of the Highway Code and can prove this through your driving ability

As long as you show the standard required, you will pass the driving test.

When I pass how do I apply for full driving licence?

If you have a photo card driving licence and your name has not changed, your examiner will send your details to DVLA. You should receive a full licence within 4 weeks.

Otherwise you will need to apply by post.

You must exchange your test pass certificate within 2 years of passing your test or you will be required to retake your test.

Why should I take a pass plus course?

Pass Plus is designed to improve your driving skills and drive more safely.

This practical training course normally takes at least 6 hours.

It can be taken at any time although it should be most useful to new drivers in the year after passing their test.

You will need a Pass Plus registered approved driving instructor (ADI) to teach you.
